Puilaurens Castle

The area is rich with activities for all tastes and ages. This region is known as Cathar Country and the various Cathar castles steeped in history are an unmissable attraction. All offer stunning views of the surrounding areas, the Pyrennees and sometimes the Med. Read more about them on Wikipedia.

Walking is a favourite activity for holiday makers and you will certainly find a great selection of paths and routes to suit your interests and abilities. You can set off from the B&B with a local guide (prices start at 50 euros) if you would so like or to explore on your own. As well as beautiful landscapes, you can discover the rich local flora and fauna of the Corbières. The butterflies (see this guide for local varieties), orchids and bird life (birds of prey in particular) attract specialists and enthusiasts.

There are many natural sites of interest, for example, the Pic de Bugarach Mountain with its strange geological formation offers wonderful and not too challenging walks.

Not far from the B&B you will find the famous site of Rennes-le-Château. Here you are in da Vinci Code Country – home of international best-seller "Holy Blood, Holy Grail". Visit the place that holds Abbé Saunière's secrets and, whether you are a believer or sceptic, you are sure to find the history of this little village interesting.

The opportunities for outdoor sports are many. The area is known for its excellent white water rafting sites. We can help you organise this experience. Read more about the possibilities here. Of course in this area are also many mountain biking routes, ranging in difficulty (routes are marked). Bikes may be hired locally and qualified guides are also available. The same is true of horse-riding.

Climbing and caving are other popular activities. Qualified instructors can help you and for children there is a forest climbing centre.

You can, of course, also sit, read your book and relax, in the peace and quiet, surrounded by the mountains!
